Lossy vs. Lossless — which should I pick?
Lossy (JPG, WebP) throws away detail the eye barely notices to shrink the file a lot — right for photos and any target-size goal. Lossless (PNG) keeps every pixel byte-for-byte identical to the resized original, so nothing is ever degraded — right for screenshots, logos, or graphics with sharp edges/text, at the cost of a bigger file. Because lossless has no quality dial, hitting a very small target size in PNG mode relies entirely on shrinking dimensions, not on visible quality loss.
